If one was confused about the path to Jesus, the funeral for Jack Layton might not shed any light on it. Although it was beautiful, enthusiastic and gut-wrenching at times, it was more of a political rally than a celebration of what is promised to those who love the Lord. It confused me and I thought I was pretty clear on things of that nature. Spirituality is a whole ball of tangled yarn to a messy world. I pray Jack finds himself in that promised place of perfection.

I am incredibly bad at keeping my ambitions to have this blog current.
I have come to a real desperate place in my life. I pass a lot of it off as middle age crazy......but God does have other ways for me to resolve some of the burning issues of my life. I have a real inclination to be distrustful of the masses around me. Everywhere around me is such dishonesty and disrespect and agenda playing that I basically do not believe anyone can or does tell the truth. Life is a big stage that the players are so badly broken that they never get to the real thing, the One thing. Talk is big and actions are bigger. The fault lies within us and around us. Back to the Garden, back to the Fall........the slithery snake of lies and deceit....I am resolved to be unresolved always. I am also the broken.....and the stage feels very awkward ....Sometimes I want no part of it and other times I wish I was a part of it, for lack of something different or of something more, of something real and honest. Is it out there......?

Time is so precious to me at this stage of my life. Unfortunately there is not enough. I need to have Him work on that through me. I am in a state of constant doing and don't know how to get out of that. Many family commitments have I and sometimes I feel I am losing myself in those commitments. Can't seem to find my way around them but I will. He will help me.

I am back. If no-one but I, read this in time.....it is ok. I am missing looking back at the places of my heart that I have been .....so with a new look and a place of total surrender to the Holy One and by allowing His thoughts and His words to speak through me.....I trust that He will give this blog a new life. Much has transpired and will continue to transpire in my life and around me on this earthly plain. Some has been life-changing and sad and gloriously wonderful and never an accident but always a divine appointment. My 50 odd years (yes, I am old) here on this mudball continues to be molded by the Hand of God and I am glad to be here and if you are checking in from time to time, welcome! If you can glean even an iota of Truth from my ramblings then He is glorified. The one most truly significant revelation that I can say today that has shaped me in the last few years is that I am so insignificant in my own strength and when I look to Him to give me insight and security and acceptance and freedom and unconditional love, my significance found in Him is above this earthly realm. I am in the Beloved and nothing I do or say in my own flesh will remove me from that place. So, I accept being imperfect in my flesh but know that my perfection lies in Jesus Christ, living and breathing His Life in and through me and I give Him all praise to Him as I lift my arms to Him in anticipation of what will be.

From a guy who makes me incredibly happy....just by being a humble brother in the Lord. He makes me smile and chuckle and laugh out loud. Really, a lot of times something like this can make me realize the power of the Body of Christ. Simple and yet so touching. The internet community that I have the pleasure of being connected into has provided something most valuable in my life. A great source of information, heart cries, and just good support in a fun and Truth filled way. I may not have the time to always be involved in all the antics and joy but I read about it and it makes my day a lot ..... We are all far from perfect in our flesh but we recognize our perfection in Christ and He is our Life. God bless you Leonard and thanks for having me on your "hit list". Read Bo's Cafe by John Lynch, Bill Thrall, and Bruce McNicol. Actually just finished the last few chapters this morning. Started it yesterday. Good sign. It captivated me. Don't comment on the fictional aspect of this book. I live in fiction. The real world is too intent on fixing everyone in 5 easy steps. I love the idea that comes through that freedom is not immediate and is a journey. I know that Freedom is Christ but this is more about appropriating that. I kind of thought it was profound.

Dying to self is...

-When you are not forgiven or you're neglected or purposely set aside and you hurt with the insult or oversight, but your heart is happy and you're content to be counted worthy to suffer for Christ- that's dying to self.

-When your good is evil spoken of; when your wishes are crossed, your advice is disregarded, your opinions are ridiculed, and you refuse to let anger arise in your heart or even defend yourself but take it all in patient loyal silence- that's dying to self.

-When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, any irregularity, or any annoyance; when you can stand face to face with foolishness, extravagance, spiritual insensitivity, and endure it as Jesus endured it- that's dying to self.

-When you see another brother prosper and see his needs being met and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy nor even question God while your needs are far greater and in desperate circumstances- that's dying to self.

-When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up in your heart--that's dying to self.

-When you never care to refer to yourself or record your own good works or seek commendation; when you can truly love to be unknown- that's dying to self.

Truly loving to be unknown...faithfully serving so that others may prosper and draw closer to Jesus. Accepting any and all tasks, regardless of where that leaves you.

I have not been sharing too much as of late (as a brother blogger has suggested to me as recently as today :) It gets tiresome - blogging and facebooking and twittering and all of it, you know. Is anybody out there listening? I am reading though, and sometimes a gem comes through as I read and I think "leave it to the Quakers to speak through Paul Anderson Walsh to me this morning". I remind myself this blog and all communication from me stems from Abba, my Father and through Him and in Him and through me (as insignificant as I feel and as significant as I am to Him...), I remember I am totally enjoying rest in Him at times as I also am sharing Words of Life from Him at other times.

I came across this quote in my reading over the weekend. Thought long and hard on this. Not sure that this is the case. As I looked up the definition of sustain....I decided that truly it is not. Parts of sustaining can be attributed to those we love, but for me, there is only one source of sustenance. It has always been this way. Even when I thought I was being sustained by other things and other people...I was mislead. I heard some teaching on love and the acts of laziness being not laziness but self-centeredness. I truly believe this. I think we all are so self-absorbed and self-focused that we forget from where our sustenance comes from and we fail to showcase Him in our daily life. Had I understood this at a much younger age.....I would definitely not believed it! (This aside comes from a quote given by Mike on Facebook today.)

Anyway.....I am thankful that there is the One True One who sustains me in every single aspect of my life, no matter what is going on.

I also agree that sometimes we can love ourselves and our intimate community so much that we forget to love others or we forget to just let God love others through us. (That is my way of putting things, anyway.) It is difficult and lonely to live without community or fellowship or whathaveyou....but it is much harder to live without True Sustenance. Having one does not preclude having the other.

Just thinking out loud today. :)

This is not the right attitude. Let us think of the tool which takes this attitude and says: "Now Master, you know what you will do. You have the plan. You know how you will work, and at what time You will do it. I am here at Your disposal. I am willing to serve You in any way You please. I am altogether consecrated to You and Your purpose. I look to You concerning the work which lies before us. You must be the wisdom, the strength and the power of endurance behind me. If I should become blunt You can sharpen me again. Everything depends upon You, but I am One with You."

Yea, I spent a life-time trying to "do" the right thing. "Live" the right way. "Say" the right thing. It started when I was a kid and tried to earn the love and acceptance of parents and family and friends. It didn't work then and it didn't work later on at school either. It didn't work in my marriage and it doesn't work raising kids.

Then came in MY trying to do everything right for God. I tried to do what I was supposed to do for years as a Christian. The thing is ... everyone had a different perspective on what that thing was. Denominations swore they had the answers and I pretty much tried them all. None of them were very consistent or even knew what they believed most of the time. It was just always about rules and ways to act and be and becoming holy somehow by doing this and that. It was tough looking around at the plastic people around me and thinking they had it together when my life was crumbling around me and I was trying and trying and trying. Imperfections made me crazy...in others and in myself. I walked away for a loooong time. I am just so glad that He loved me so much that He never walked away....you know what I mean...from me.

It has been in the last 5 years that I have come into an understanding first and foremost of the Love of God that I finally began to understand. There were lots of instrumental people that God put in my path to direct and help me understand how much I was loved by God .... never having felt this truly by anyone ....it took a while to internalize. This understanding, real understanding of unconditional love was key for me. When I was introduced to the Exchanged Life or the Grace Walk or whatever label you want to put on it....it was like freedom ...it was like heavy stones lifted from my heart and shoulders. Could it be? I could rest for a while and just let Jesus minister to me and through me. It has been an awesome journey and I have never been more passionate about living this Life. I think it was easier to fall into the performance trap and doing because it is organized and orderly and makes sense in a warped kind of peculiar way....rather than falling into love with Jesus and having a real relationship with Him because being real and vulnerable and open was never a part of who I was....I still have a long road ahead but appropriating my identity in Christ and really getting it, you know... and realizing that I was loved NO MATTER WHAT and so was everyone around me, and He could love through me to others ....even those that I never thought I could love....it has been the biggest thrill and adventure of my life....but it is hard getting past the thoughts of old and the way things have always been. I just love finally coming to the place where I know that I am a new creation and just loving to Read Romans 8 regularly to be reminded .... nothing....can keep me from His Love. How could it? His Life is in me. My mind needs to be renewed constantly to keep the evil out....but I think I have come to a comfortable place of recognizing that and not letting it overcome me. I focus on the Truth and that is Jesus to me. Jesus will never allow anyone to make me feel less than who I am....anymore....and Jesus would never let me "try" to win over all of those sad souls....He has everything in His Hands and I don't need to do anything but know the One True Thing and there are no unrealistic expectations ....He knows me and still He loves me!

How cool is that? Sometimes the Love piece is what I find needs to happen first and foremost in the hurting people around me who are trying so hard to "do" the Lord's work. Living loved allows Him to love through you to others. Top of my list anyway was to recognize the Love that is freely given. Grace .... is He to me!

CARROTS, EGGS & COFFEE

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up, She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans . She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Brennan Manning - the furious longing of God

Kind of coinciding with one of on coffee's recently posted videos, I had on order for myself Brennan Manning's new book "the furious longing of God". (How could I resist a Manning book at all and especially with a title like that?) It was a moment of weakness and then I saw Mike's post and figured ... it was all good :) I had to justify it being a birthday present because....I am trying to finish the mountain of books that I have piled high next to my desk ....which I think relates to another post about "stuff stuff stuff", in light of eternity. But I envision a very large library in my mansion....despite the fact I will have all my questions answered...I love to read. Any way...after that aside...listen to the back write-up on the jacket of the book. Oh I do love Brennan. I would love to share an evening of discussion with him on this earthly plain....but alas, I fear it shall never happen....I hear him and his understanding of the love of God through his words, and his references to Scripture.

Then God said, ''Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground (Genesis 1:26).

Reign in life--not in heaven--in life, now, at this present time. That means to control events, to govern the effects of life around us, through fulfilling the program of the Father and moving in the direction God determines. Redeemed man is never to be a helpless victim of circumstances. It was not meant for the world to make havoc of the church but for the church to make havoc of the world.

If you read the events of our Lord's last week in Jerusalem, you will see exactly what I mean. There He is, moving toward the goal that the Father has ordained, that He should die upon a cross. He sets His face like a flint to go up to Jerusalem and is constantly aiming at that moment He knows to be the Father's program for Him. But notice how He goes toward it in full control of every circumstance. He sends out the disciples to do the work that leads to His arrest. He dismisses Judas to go out into the night. When the soldiers come to take Him, He rebukes them, and they fall to the ground in fear. He could easily have turned and fled, but He waits quietly for them to take Him. The only untroubled person in all that troubled account is the person of the Lord Jesus as He walks in solitary majesty through all those tumultuous events. He was reigning in life. And that is what the Christian is called to do. The circumstances of our lives are sent by the Father--they are the program God has picked out for us--but our attitude in them is to master every event, not being taken by surprise.

How cool that the message that I heard this a.m. was on how we stand against the campaign of demons and lies. The battle that rages in our minds. How do we? With all the things that Jesus is.....Truth, Love, Significance, and that...is how we deal with warfare....by the renewing of our mind in faith. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes (Ephesians 6:11).

Our experience confirms the suggestion of this passage—that life is basically a struggle. Life never conforms to the rosy idealism of our dreams or to the romanticism of our songs. The explanation of this struggle lies deeper than we ordinarily think. The common view of our struggle has been that we are engaged in conflict against flesh and blood, against other men and women. But Paul says the battle is not against flesh and blood; it lies deeper than that. The basic problem is that this is a battle between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan and that people themselves are the battlefield. The battle is visible not only in the wars, revolutions, and crime waves that fill our newspapers, but it is also seen in the inner tensions and fears of individual lives, in the neurotic problems and mental illnesses that afflict us today, in family fights and church struggles. It is even visible in nature, where all of life competes in a ruthless, deadly struggle to survive.
The whole race has fallen under the control of satanic forces, which Paul calls, "the world rulers of this present darkness" (6:12 RSV)—a most significant phrase. The picture of the Bible from beginning to end is that all human beings without Christ, without exception, regardless of how clever or educated or cultured they may be, are the helpless victims of satanic control. Under the control of satanic forces human beings are uncomfortable and unhappy but also completely unable to escape by any wisdom or power of their own.
But the good news is that some have been set free through the coming of that "stronger one," Jesus Himself, who came, as John tells us, "to destroy the devil's work" (1 John 3:8b). Through Him deliverance is obtained. Through the amazing mystery of the cross and the resurrection, Jesus has broken the power and bondage of Satan over human lives. Those who individually receive and acknowledge this are set free to live in the freedom and liberty of the children of God.
They are not set free to live unto themselves. They are set free in order to battle. That is the call that comes to all Christians. We are not set free in order to enjoy ourselves. We are set free to do battle, to engage in the fight, to overcome in our own lives, and to become the channels by which others are set free. How do you do this? Paul's answer is in one phrase: "Put on the whole armor of God." Full provision has been made that you might win in this battle. This is the amazing thing we must learn. God has made full provision for us to fight these forces that hold the world in their grip.

The Theme is Rain

We have had much rain. Family and friend's basements or basement apartments are flooding and just really making things difficult for everyone. I live on the eighth floor and I still have trouble with rain and windows. Rain can be an interesting and inconvenient thing, eh? Rain can be a truly awesome and beautiful thing as well as noted in the video above.

Some people look for rain from God by way of I guess His Holy Spirit for refreshment as do parched, barren and dry arid lands look for rain for relief. It does not always come.

So circumstances dictate to us the need for rain. Or is the rain an answer to anything spiritual at all? Some have said we need not ask for an anointing or a drenching of the Holy Spirit because everything is already there waiting to be called upon, if you are a child of the King.

There have been some sadnesses of late. Deaths of friends, sicknesses, difficult circumstances....do we look for the rain....or do we know that the Creator of the rain and all other things is in control. The basements will dry out....the barren lands may see some moistening. Will our lives, minds and hearts be renewed by the knowledge that God is in Control and in Jesus, is our Life and all rainstorms have a purpose, unknown by us at times....but a Heavenly purpose nonetheless. Cry out to Him, cry for the rain to fall on crusted lands and dry-bone hearts, by all means....but if you know Him ...know that He hears and understands the sorrow, the pain but that He is the only answer to every care - despite how we feel. He is Peace, Love, Joy, Comfort and all of those things that we desperately search for outside ourselves.

I love this thought and it addresses the whole what or who I am versus what I do philosophy that has taught me much about the Grace and Love of an Awesome Father. Today's Invisible Reality in the Heavenlies only In Christ.

On Ephesians 1:3-24

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 1:3).

Remember that all these blessings are available to us in the realm that Paul calls the heavenlies. He is not referring to heaven here; he does not mean going to heaven when you die. We get such distorted concepts of heaven! Heaven, as most people envision it, is not an attractive place to me—damp, rainy clouds; unstrung harps out of tune; and white robes. A good travel brochure could make west Texas look preferable to heaven. And yet most people think that this is what Paul is talking about when he speaks of the heavenlies.

No, "in the heavenly realms" is a reference to the invisible realities of our life now. These realities certainly reach on into eternity, but they are something to be experienced now in your inner life—your thought life, where you feel conflict and pressure, struggle and disaster—that is part of the heavenlies. It is where we are exposed to the attack of the principalities and powers , those dark spirits in high places who get to us and depress us and frighten us and make us anxious or hostile. The heavenlies is not only the realm of conflict but also where God can release us and deliver us, where the Spirit of God reaches us at the seat of our intellect, emotions, and our will. It is the realm of those deep, surging urges that rise within us and create either a restlessness or a sense of peace, depending on the source from which they come. So don't read this as though it were something out in space somewhere. These blessings are yours in your inner experience now if you are in Jesus Christ.

Obviously, all of this comes to us in one great package "in Christ." If you are not a Christian, you cannot possibly claim these benefits, because they are not yours—there is no way you can appropriate them unless you are in Christ. But if you are "in Christ," there is nothing to keep you from having all of them, every moment of every day. That is why it is so important that we discover what they are.

These are much more than mere theological ideas. They are facts, foundational truths that undergird us in every moment of our life. And unless you understand those facts, you can't utilize or benefit from them. In that way they are like natural laws. The laws of nature operate regardless of how we feel—they are impersonal in that respect.

In my experience of doing electrical work, I've discovered that electricity follows a pattern of its own and takes no notice of how I feel at the moment. That can be a shocking experience! It doesn't hesitate to retaliate for any violation of its laws that I commit. It is up to me to discover how it works and then to respect it if I want to utilize it. The same thing is true of these great facts. They will not do you a particle of good if you don't discover what they are and believe them enough to operate on the basis of them.

Father, thank You for these vast truths. I pray that my understanding may be made equal to them. I can't grasp them properly apart from the work of Your Spirit, and I pray that You will open my eyes and help me to see that these things are true indeed.
